San Francisco is small enough that you can actually cover a lot of ground in one day if you go in the right order. Here's the loop I'd do, roughly west-to-south with a downtown stop first.
9:00 AM -- Ferry Building Marketplace
Start with coffee and something to eat here -- it's a food hall right on the Embarcadero, with a farmers market on select mornings. Easy parking-free start if you're coming in by BART or rideshare.
10:30 AM -- Salesforce Park
A short ride from the Ferry Building. This elevated public park above the Salesforce Transit Center is free, green, and usually quiet -- a nice 30-minute breather with a close-up view of the Salesforce Tower. I snapped this photo here on one of my visits.
12:00 PM -- Golden Gate Bridge & Crissy Field
Head across town for lunch with a view. Walk or bike the Crissy Field promenade for the best low-angle shots of the bridge, and grab something from one of the food trucks or bring a picnic.
2:00 PM -- Palace of Fine Arts
Just a few minutes from Crissy Field, so it's an easy add-on. Quiet lagoon, swans, and one of the more photogenic spots in the city -- good for a slower hour after lunch.
5:30 PM -- Twin Peaks (sunset)
Save this one for last. It's the single best 360-degree view of the whole city, and sunset is when it's worth the wind. Time it right and you'll watch the fog roll in over the skyline.
Timing tips
- Do this on a weekday if you can -- weekends add traffic and crowds at every stop.
- Rideshare between stops; parking downtown and near Twin Peaks is limited.
- Layer up -- it can be 15 degrees colder at Twin Peaks than downtown.
- If you only have half a day, keep the Ferry Building, Golden Gate Bridge, and Twin Peaks -- those three cover the essentials.
Pack for the day
Comfy walking shoes, my everyday bag, and a layer you can tie around your waist -- all on my LTK under Travel Favs and Everyday Bag.
