I get this question more than any other: "We're visiting the Bay Area — where should we actually go?" So here it is, the list I send to friends. Not the postcard version. The real one.
For the views
Lands End is my number one. It's a cliffside trail with sweeping ocean views, and if you time it for early morning you'll mostly have it to yourself. Wear real shoes.
For a slow afternoon
Closer to home, Santana Row in San Jose is where I go to wander, grab a coffee, and feel like I'm on a mini getaway twenty minutes from my front door.
For the coast
Half Moon Bay deserves a whole day — I wrote a slow weekend guide if you want the full version.
For food and color
The Mission District in San Francisco: murals on every corner and, in my humble opinion, the best taquerias in the entire Bay.
A few honest tips
- The Bay has microclimates — pack a layer no matter the forecast.
- Weekday mornings beat weekend afternoons everywhere on this list.
- Don't try to do it all in one trip. Pick two areas and go slow.
